Requirements to Adopt a Child

In Texas, the law sets out several requirements for prospective adoptive parents. Texas law includes several requirements to ensure that the parent will be able to care for an adopted child. Specifically, Texas law requires the parent be at least twenty one years old, financially stable, and responsible mature.
In addition, Texas law includes several requirements to determine whether the parent is likely to provide a safe and supportive environment for the adopted child. These requirements include the parent submitting an application, providing references, showing proof of marriage (or divorce), agreeing to home visits and a criminal background checks, and attending certain training courses.
If these requirements are met, the prospective parent may be allowed to adopt a child in Texas.
