Question:

A person who I thought was my best friend (until I heard this) is spreading various hurtful and potentially harmful rumors about me. The one that affects me the most is that the statement that I am HIV positive. This is entirely untrue (I have evidence to back this claim). We live in a small community, word gets around quickly and it's beginning to have a detrimental effect not only on my personal state of mind, but in social relations (some people don't want to be my friend anymore and people who don't even know me will walk by and make comments on the street). I do not know why this started, there was no argument or disagreement between the two of us; it completely puzzles me. If this gets out of hand, it could hurt my career. I've worked hard in school and retain an excellent GPA. My plan is to go to medical school, and this could really hurt my career. There are other things that are being said, that are really awful, but this is the one that can affect (is affecting) my entire life.
