Consumer law is the branch of law related to the purchase of goods and services for personal use.
There are a number of state and federal consumer law statutes. These statutes include the Truth in Lending Act, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Consumer Leasing Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, and the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Most states have enacted similar consumer protection statutes. Consumers also benefit from statutes related to consumer law, including tort, contract, and property laws. These consumer protection laws allow consumers to bring claims and recover damages for consumer law transactions.
There are a number of court and administrative agencies that hear and regulate consumer law transactions. Small claims courts across the nation address consumer law claims. The Federal Trade Commission or FTC also regulates consumer law transactions. The FTC focuses on deceptive trade practices such as false advertising, phony investment schemes, and bogus health claims.
